I think of her in Lone Pine Posing by a rusted old wreck we found Parked behind a diner On our way up north to Puget Sound, yeah We listen to the radio Zealots and staticky talk talk talk She’s mimicking their voices I tend to drift lanes when I laugh a lot, oh Well that’s not such a good thing If you’re into survival Hey Hey it’s never really obvious that everything’s just fine That said sometimes I guess a cloud is just a cloud and not a sign Of the grand decline We grow silent with the hours The road metaphor hangs in the air Where exactly are we going There’s way too much subtext there, so I drive with just my left eye So it looks like I'm sleeping Hey Hey it’s never really obvious that everything’s just fine That said sometimes I guess a cloud is just a cloud and not a sign Of the grand decline So we’re taking the backroads,  And soon we are hopelessly lost We pull into a small town,  And it’s kind of charming We’re told the only place to stay here,  Is a hundred year old hotel It’s across from the courthouse,  It’s across from the courthouse So that night I ask the question In the morning we walk across the small town square Can I get a witness Then I give my bride a kiss and we are outta there, ya Hey hey it’s never really obvious that everything’s just fine That said sometimes a cloud is only just a cloud and not a sign Hey hey it’s never really obvious that everything’s just fine That said sometimes a cloud is really just a cloud and not a sign Of the grand decline

The cold is slowing me up Walking three blocks from the store To my fifth floor walkup And I lean my bags against the door And I am home Trip on my shoe, and turn on the light And I call to say I can’t wait to see you tonight Doo da doo… I hope that you like tuna I made it special just for you Or we could order take-out If you would rather have Chinese food I dab on cologne Put away my shoes and dim the lights And I really can’t wait to see her tonight Doo da doo… Perhaps I should play some music But don’t play just any old song Put something eclectic on Coltrane Mingus or Bach Oh no look at the clock it’s late  I still need time to check on the tuna She’s calling from the lobby So I go and buzz her in By the time she gets up to the fifth floor She’s so out of breath, that she falls into my arms And we are home Candles and wine the stars align And I tell her I’m really glad to see her (you) tonight Doo da doo… Doo da doo… Doo da doo

Broken Arrow 03:36
Broken Arrow above the bar Reminds us all of who we are A neon sign, uneven stools And a few of my favorite fools I talk up Mary, an old friend We have some history from way back when Which keeps us close, which keeps things strange As if we’re both afraid to change Often times when I’m too alone You’re as far as the moon, as close as the phone Love is something we might have known If we tried, If we’d only tried This town is small More cows than cars Seven churches and seven bars And this one’s ours, our second home At least we got someplace to go We say tomorrow’s another day That’s a lie we like to say We like to say we’re doing well Another lie we tend to tell It’s getting late, the lights come on We help each other put our jackets on Then face the chill and wave good night And trust we both get home alright

Wasting Time 04:47
The first thing I knew that drew me to you Was the fact that you didn’t seem to care Much about anything You’d once put me down for liking Jackson Browne You said that his songs were too slow and overly serious And who knew no I didn’t have a clue It took me a while to see Then it was clear it was all just veneer You were breaking inside just like me Let the grass grow high Let the leaves lay down Watch the stars roll by In their own sweet time And we’ll sing These Days And we’ll choke on the line Don’t remind me of my failures I have not forgotten mine Then as you know, a couple of summers ago We got lost walking in some bog Somewhere in Florida Covered in bites, we sank to new heights We didn’t make it back to the car til somewhere past midnight We still had to smile, though it took us a while Til we’d showered and turned out the light So maybe it’s a false sense of well being But I think that my favorite thing's when  we’re Wasting Time, Wasting Time Let the grass grow high Let the leaves lay down Watch the stars roll by In their own sweet time

Echo Wood 03:28
I lean my rifle against the post I dream of coffee and hot buttered toast One day I’ll take off this pack and unload all this gear And take a long walk without the fear Back home in Echo Wood That’s where I’d like to be My fellow soldiers know it’s understood That we’re all here for the greater good We’ve all been wounded to some degree We've seen some things that we can’t unsee One day I’ll have a drink for laughs, and not because I need one Or two or three, I don’t recognize me Back home in Echo Wood That’s where I’d like to be My fellow soldiers know it’s understood That we’re all fighting for the greater good Write a letter home Everything is fine Everything is fine Back home in Echo Wood That’s where I’d like to be Every soldier knows it’s understood That we’re all fighting for the greater good Yes everybody’s fighting for the greater good

about

"Witty, Intelligent pop", says the OC Weekly. The latest from Puppets of Castro once again features the songs of Andrew Lorand and the vocals of Darryl Purpose, backed by a great band who don't mind that their names are not mentioned here. One hopes. Produced by Greg Krueger. Artwork and design by Yehuda Blum. Enjoy.

First, I’d like to thank the makers of diet Mtn Dew for their fine caffeine filled beverage, though it’s confusing on the bottle where it says there are zero calories per serving, two servings per container, but somehow the container has ten calories. Confusing. Ok, now the part where I thank people. First my wife Sharon who offered some sage advice about the direction my songs should take, and it was good advice. My wonderful family Yakov, Rivka, Baruch, Yehuda, Ian and David, who offered feedback and unwarranted praise. I’m a big fan of unwarranted praise. Enormous thanks to the songwriting group, Joyce Woodson, Kristina Olson, and Susan Anders, without whom most of these songs would not exist. I greatly appreciate the fine musicians who played on the album. Lisa Johnson and Earl Grey, as always, blend beautifully on background vocals. So great to have Joe Tobias singing on this project, (he and I being veterans of The Adipose Rhythm Dukes a few decades back). Thanks to the great Marty Rifkin on dobro and pedal steel, and to my musical partner for twenty years, Preston Gould on vocals and trumpet. Thanks to Peter Grayling on cello, and Johanna Modey on vocals. Special thanks to the band. I’m a lucky man to have talents like Ritt Henn, Art Simon, and Albe Bonacci on board. Many thanks to Darryl Purpose for lending his wonderful lead vocals to the project. The man can really sing. And to Greg Krueger. I can’t say enough about all Greg did to shape this album, in arranging and instrumentation. And I thank him for not punching me for all the nit picky changes I kept lobbing at him. Also, thanks to Tom Banton, Melissa Morgan, Phil Ward, Tom Hall, Bryan Lever, Bruce Linde, Joey Steiner, and Johanna Henz for volunteering their time and talent. And to Tom Ianniello, just because. And a great big thank you to Yehuda Blum, illustrator of ‘The Clever Little Tailor’ (kinderloshn.org), for his wonderful cover art and design. Nicely done. Much thanks and appreciation to you all. Now, what are we going to call the next album? Almost nobody likes the title of this one, so I’m open to suggestions.

Just as this album we being completed, I lost my brother, Steven. He was a uniquely kind person, and despite numerous hardships, seemed to enjoy life more than most. He truly loved music. He loved the arts and history, and would have to be dragged out of museums at closing time. Literally. He was my big brother, and even at this late stage, it felt like we were just getting started. I miss him every single day.

Also during the making of this album, we lost Mark Humphreys. Mark started and ran Trough records, and inspired countless songwriters to get off the proverbial couch and make some music. He would then help find that music a home. Mark was always honest, and encouraging. He also really loved music. He was my best friend, and I wish we’d had more time together. He was also a brilliant singer/songwriter. Please check out Mark’s music, and music he loved, at trough.com. This album is dedicated to Steven, and to Mark. Now, go tell someone that you love them.
